Crêt du Midi – Rhone Valley and the Alps

The picturesque holiday village of Vercorin is found at the farthest edge of the Val d'Anniviers, on a piece of land jutting out over the Rhone Valley. From the edge of the village a gondola has been running up the Crêt du Midi, the closest peak between Val d'Anniviers and Vallon de Réchy, since 1973.

Sweeping views extend from far into the Val d'Anniviers valley to the glistening white four-thousanders, the Bella Tola on the other valley side, and across the Rhone Valley as far as the Vaud and Bernese Alps.

Bettmerhorn-Märjelensee glacier path

Alongside the Aletsch Glacier, which with a length of 23km is the longest ice flow of the Alps, the path takes you from the Bettmerhorn to the Märjelensee (Lake Märjelen). Descending gently at first it then proceeds in big bends up stone stairs to the Rote Chumma.

Bettmeralp: Alongside the Aletsch Glacier, which with a length of 23km is the longest ice flow of the Alps, the path takes you from the Bettmerhorn to the Märjelensee (Lake Märjelen).

Grimsel gneiss and Glacial Ice

The Oberaar Lake often contains ice floes which is not further surprising given that the water comes directly from the nearby glacier.

The Grimsel area is a landscape of ancient stone and primeval forces. This pass has always been used to cross from North to South or vice-versa. It also constitutes the watershed between the North Sea and the Mediterranean and offers some spectacular hikes, ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs on the vertical granite walls.
