On the first Sunday after Ash Wednesday, called "Funkensonntag", it is customary for communities throughout Liechtenstein to light bonfires, referred to as "Funken". This tradition is meant to chase away winter. A puppet representing winter, called the "Funkenhexe", is filled with firecrackers, placed on top of the bonfire and set alight. The explosion of the "Funkenhexe" marks the 'death' of winter. Some villages opt to burn their "Funken" on Saturday evening.
