Since the invention of the light bulb, the design and use of artificial light belongs to the most fascinating tasks for designers, artists and architects. Many of them count as icons of design history, such as Wagenfeld´s famous Bauhaus lamp. In recent years, the applications of light have expanded dramatically, thanks to new technologies. Many classics from the museum´s lighting collection will be shown for the first time.
Biel's carnival begins with the "Charivari" in the old town, where the "Guggen" brass bands try to surpass one another in regards to the most original lighting fixtures and lanterns. Afterwards, "Prince Carnival" is enthroned at the Burgplatz. Biel's mayor hands over the keys to the city of Biel to "Prince Carnival" for five days. A "monster concert" ends the ceremony. Then the traditional carnival takes place with concerts, visits to the decorated restaurants and carnival cellars, tents...
