Hochbrücke (high bridge)
Overview
Intro
The Hochbrücke over the Limmat was built in 1926 in the style of a Roman aqueduct.
At the request of Walter Boveri, founder of Brown Boveri & Cie, this steel-concrete structure was overlaid with Ticino gneiss, which significantly increased the cost but which has protected the bridge until today. The Hochbrücke is some 26 metres above the water level of the Limmat and the large arch has a span of 72 metres. The eastern end of the bridge affords a beautiful view over the tiered aspect of Baden’s medieval Old Town. Before the construction of the Hochbrücke, traffic to and from Wettingen and Zurich had to use the steep Haldenstrasse over the covered wooden bridge.
