The Border Trail follows the culturally and historically significant border between the cantons of Bern and Lucerne. The trail begins at the Baroque monastery of St. Urban and leads up the Brienz Rothorn Mountain.

Start: Langenthal
Destination: Brünigpass
Route: Langenthal - St. Urban - Huttwil - Napf - Turner - Marbachegg - Kemmeriboden - Brienzer Rothorn - Brünigpass
Distance: approx. 115 km (depending on the trails)
Ascent: approx. 6'400 m in total
Descent: approx. 5'800 min total
Hiking tine: approx. 40 hours
Overnight: Huttwil, Napf, Trubschachen, Marbach, Kemmeriboden, additional inns near the border trail, sleeping on straw beds.


Like a veritable string of pearls, leisuretime and adventure offerings line this trail. The hiking tour through an almost pristine landscape takes you on trails for all levels of skills, including wildly romantic ones, from St. Urban via the Napf Mountain (1,408 m a.s.l.) the Turner (1,215 m a.s.l.) and the Wachthubel (1,414 m. a.s.l.) up the Brienz Rothorn Mountain (2,350 m a.s.l.).

Section 1 Langenthal – Huttwil
Easy, mostly level introductory hike.

Section 2 Huttwil – Napf
Constant uphill path from Huttwil to the popular Ahorn vantage point.

Section 3 Napf – Trubschachen
Varied hike from the Napf up the Turner and down through forest and meadows to Trubschachen.

Section 4 Trubschachen – Marbach
From Trubschachen up the Rämisgummen hill with superb views of the Alpine foothills.

Section 5 Marbach – Brienzer Rothorn
The “king’s stage” on the border path! From Marbachegg superb views of Alpine-foothill regions. Then long and perspiration-producing uphill via Salwidili to the Brienzer Rothorn.

Section 6 Brienzer Rothorn – Brünigpass
Popular ridge hike over the Eisee saddle to Arnihaagen, with breathtaking views of the Brienzersee.
