Descending from Kaltbad to Weggis

Rigi – Queen of the Mountains

Rigi – Queen of the Mountains

As Switzerland's most visited mountain, Mt. Rigi has gained international fame. This became possible only after the mountain world was opened up by mountain trains. The Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn, a railroad running between Vitznau and Kaltbad, was opened on May 21, 1871. An extension to Mt. Kulm was presented to the public on June 27, 1873.

The hiking tour starts with a steep descent from the Rigi-Kaltbad Valley Station in the direction of Vitznau. Every so often your glance is drawn to the might rock faces which are part of the ridge of Mt. Dossen. On the valley side the view of the lake basin of Vierwaldstaettersee, or Lake Lucerne, opens up. Shortly before reaching the lake resort of Vitznau, the route turns right and runs along the slope in the direction of Weggis. Constantly going up and down, across meadows and through dense forests, you will hike in a westerly direction. The hiking route between Vitznau und Weggis, high above the lake, has become an unparalled, sought-after panoramic tour.
