The pagans saw these as sacred sites and venerated this remainder of the last Ice Age. At the Holenstein, the largest boulder, the mystique that emanated from these stones is palpable to this day. Many small boulders were split by Christians in the Middle Ages and thus demystified. The fractures are occasionally still visible.
