Historic guilds houses in the old town of Zurich

Zurich

The lively tradition of merchant guilds in Zurich is dating back to the Middle Ages. Equally impressive are their fine guild houses and guildhalls – such as the Zunfthaus zur Waag, open since at least 1303. Like the Grossmünster church, the Lindenhof square and the Öpfelchammer restaurant in the Niederdorf, these venues are now among the city’s cherished emblems.

Zurich’s history has been significantly influenced by the guilds since the 14th century. During the private tour “Guild Town Zürich – stories and traditions“, the visitor retraces the history of the historic guilds. “Sechseläuten“ (Ringing the Grossmünster bell at six o'clock) is the historic Zurich spring celebration. The customs and traditions of the guilds are also topics of this guided tour. Subsequently a Zurich delicacy, “Geschnetzeltes” (fine strips of veal in cream sauce, Zurich-style ragout) is served.
