A group of happy Nereids are frolicking on a rock in the sea. We know of these Mediterranean nymphs from Greek mythology. Spurred on by the mighty waves, some of the company hurl themselves over the rock in feats of acrobatic daring, while others loll pleasurably in the swirling spume. Böcklin had a predilection for mythological figures and fabulous beings. He gives his figures a boundless passion for the elemental pleasures, and does not even shy away from grotesquerie and earthiness.
