Le Funiculaire – a useful treasure

Le Funiculaire, Fribourg

All are familiar with the "Funi"- a city center funicular in lower Neuveville. The nostalgic and well-weathered railway has been underway free of electricity or innocuous fumes since 1899!

The "Funiculaire" has certainly earned its place on the list of cultural treasures of national importance. Ascending a total 56.4 climb in altitude, the upper carriage uses 3000 litres of filtered wastewater to supply it the power it needs. A cog wheel in the Riggenbach rack operated by the driver regulates the speed.

And the clanking and creaking of the over a century old green railway, alive today thanks to the support of the Freiburg population, is more than worth a detour and ride.
