Each second, around 100 liters of warm (20°C) water flow out of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel. In the region’s tropical house, this heat energy is used in a meaningful way. In the extensive construction, which is open to the public, tropical plants and warm-water fish thrive. Once the Sturgeon bred here are sexually mature, caviar production begins. Despite caviar and tropical fruit production sufficient energy remains, and this flows into the circulation system of the regional heating network, after which the water is cool enough to be directed into the Kander. Through Sturgeon breeding, caviar production and tropical fruit from own greenhouses, the tropical house thus takes a leading role in the use of renewable energy in Alpine regions, and is both an attractive as well as highly interesting excursion destination for people of all ages.

In two restaurants, gourmets are treated to a refined combination of seasonal and regional products, including tropical fruit and fish from our own cultivation.
