Intro

With its rust-red exterior, Palazzo Castelmur is one of the landmarks of the Bergell. The exhibition there follows the life of the emigrants from Bergell, who made careers as confectioners all over Europe.

Palazzo Castelmur is located in Coltura near Stampa and dates back to the days of Baron Giovanni von Castelmur, who came from one of the oldest families in Bergell. He was born in Stampa in 1800 but grew up in Marseille, where his family ran a well-known confectionery shop. After completing his studies, he ran his own successful confectionery shop in Nice.

Castelmur returned to Bergell as a wealthy man and soon became the owner of several properties, including an old patrician residence that once belonged to the Redolfi family. He had this extended and decorated with a new facade, resulting in the Palazzo Castelmur we see today.

These days, the palazzo belongs to the municipality and is open to the public as a museum. You can visit the park, but also the historically furnished rooms – a spectacular mixture of chivalric tradition, plush and pomp.
