The Sommêtre ridge by Le Noirmont is one of the most scenic and breeziest points in Canton Jura. During the Middle Ages the Spiegelberg Lords constructed a castle on the narrow rock ridge; considered impregnable owing to the steep hillsides both north and south and an almost vertical drop. Today, solely a heap of stones and access in the form of steps cut in the rock remind one of days long gone. For now a refuge, from which you enjoy far-reaching views over the razor-sharp ridge (a popular spot for climbers), the valley of Doubs and French Jura has taken its place.
This spectacular and somewhat exposed location is reached from Muriaux on an initially broad gravel path through grasslands and pine forests. And the final stretch runs along the visibly narrowing ridge path. The same section is covered for the return journey, but then branches off at the parting of ways (Point 1075) direction south – to pass through Les Combes on the way to the Le Noirmont clinic on Roc Montès, and then on to the village.
The careful planning of a tour will ensure that you also derive the maximum pleasure and enjoyment from it. Please take the time to contact the local information centre and enquire about route and weather conditions before setting off. Your intended trail may be fully or partially closed, depending on the time of year and weather conditions.
