Raftsmen’s Trail
Overview
Intro
The 20km-long Raftsmen’s Trail offers a journey through the history of timber rafting accompanied by stunning views.
In the 19th century, timber rafting was a flourishing trade for the towns and villages along the Rhine and Aare. The rafters took their timber downriver from Stilli to Laufenburg, via the Aare and Rhine. They then returned to their starting point on foot through Mettauertal, stopping off at the Gasthaus zum Bären in Hottwil to recharge their batteries
The Raftsmen’s Trail is around 20km long and takes around five hours to hike without breaks. The trail begins in Laufenburg and ends in Stilli. Various information boards along the way reveal fascinating facts about this forgotten trade. Hikers can take a break at Gasthaus zum Bären, where raftsmen once fortified themselves before tackling the rest of their journey.
The Raftsmen’s Trail can be joined at various different points and walked in stages. The entire trail is signposted and well-connected to public transport. The route is suitable for pushchairs and a diversion can be taken to avoid the steep steps leading up to the Hottwil vineyards.
A journey for the senses “A feast for the palate on the Raftsmen's Trail”: The culinary adventure begins in the friendly Jurapark town of Laufenburg. At the indulgent Maier bakery, guests receive delicious treats as well as information about the Raftsmen's Trail. On the hike that follows, guests will learn about the forgotten craft of the rafters and enjoy a regional 2-course meal at the Gasthaus zum Bären in Hottwil to round off the tour.
