The first dam was built on the Grimsel pass, at the time being the largest one in the world. Over the years a gigantic system of power plants, cavernes and galleries has been built underneath the granite rocks - a technoligical miracle amidst this powerful environment. Visitors can now enjoy a day full of contrasts when visiting this very special location.
The visit of the facility is a journey of the past, showing you the power plant at Handeck, guiding you through the historical buildings and making the history of energy production come to live. Even today the original machinery is in place, still producing enough electricity today and in the future. On this guided tour you will get an insight into the very special world of this power plant and will get to enjoy a ride on the Gelmerbahn.

The Grimsel area offers a host of fascinating insights into electricity production from hydropower. The KWO runs restaurants and hotels, operates mountain railways, provides information about the subterranean world of the power plant, and builds and maintains overhead rope bridges and mountain trails.
