Piora – Ritom funicular railway

One of the steepest funicular railways travels from the Leventina to the Ritomsee lake. A special excursion with some extraordinary and varying sights along the way.

Constructed in 1921 for the reservoir, the little red railway today transports 100 people per hour to the relaxing region around the mountain lakes in the Val Piora valley. Here mountain restaurants are renowned for their tasty Ticino specialities.

Popular mountain hikes to the Cadlimo alpine hut, on over the Oberalp Pass and Passo dell' Uomo to the Lukmanier Pass - or the classic tour over the Passo del Sole to Acquacalda.

Special comments: The Gotthard base tunnel runs just beneath Piora, and geological rock conditions were originally the cause of much concern.
