Unterbäch: Dorf

This is where, in 1957, Swiss women first had the vote - against the wishes of the Swiss Federal Government. Its central location in Upper Valais makes it the ideal spot for setting out on excursions throughout the region. Opposite Unterbäch, on the other side of the valley and framed by a unique mountain panorama, the imposing Bietschhorn mountain, a UNESCO world natural heritage site since 1999, watches over the village.

The visitor-friendly village of Unterbäch, with a population of 460, lies on a high sunny plateau at an altitude of 1,239 metres above sea level.

The village grew from several hamlets and, in 1957, it became famous throughout Switzerland for allowing women to vote at the ballot box for the first time, against the will of the Swiss government. Unterbäch therefore became known as the ‘Swiss women’s Rütli’. There is a theme trail devoted to this particular aspect of Unterbäch’s history, featuring quotes from famous women.
