In the autumn, the cabbage heads roll in "Chabisland" – as the Gürbetal is fondly called by its inhabitants. Tonnes of white cabbage are harvested and made into "Surchabis" (sauerkraut). Cabbage is only grown on about 140 hectares in Switzerland, and half of these (4000 tonnes) are in the Gürbetal. In 1908, 108 cabbage farmers from the Gürbetal set up the Thurnen sauerkraut factory, which has been run as a cooperative ever since.
