Description

The easiest way from the Great St. Bernhard to the neighbouring Val Ferret valley leads through Italian territory. And starting point of this scenic tour is the hospice at the top of the pass, home of the legendary Saint Bernhard dogs. And although no longer in use for avalanche rescues, some of Barry’s successors still spend summers up here. Following the border crossing, the mountain trail descends to Alp Baou, after which, a 300-meter climb in altitude leads back to Switzerland. The Fenêtre de Ferret, name of the pass crossing, indeed represents views as though seen from a window – and the Val Ferret is best described as a wildly-romantic yet sparsely populated valley terminating on the west side of the Montblanc massif. The steady descent leads firstly to the Lacs de Fenêtre, three small, crystal-clear mountain lakes on and enchanting plateau – after which, following numerous stretching bends; you arrive at the Alp Les Ars and finally your long-awaited Ferret village destination.
