The home for soldiers at the foot of the Gastlosen, established during the throes of the Second World War, was built on the initiative of a major whose idea was to prepare his troops for combat in winter. And luckily, today, the authentic mountain hut provides food and shelter for hiking and climbing enthusiasts. Beautiful views over Gruyere country are yours from the terrace, while the massive limestone walls of the Gastlosen dominate your field of view looking east. The old soldiers’ abode is reached from the Musersbergli, top chairlift station of the «Gastlosen-Express» - on a gently winding up and down path through woods and pastures – requiring 2.5 hours for the walk there and back. And those who can afford more time turn the excursion into a round hike around the Gastlosen. In this case, you then climb a narrow and party exposed trail to the Wolfs-Ort place; and from there, with splendid views over Saanen country and the Simmental valley, you reach the Chalet Grat. The way back to Musersbergli then follows through mountain forests.
The careful planning of a tour will ensure that you also derive the maximum pleasure and enjoyment from it. Please take the time to contact the local information centre and enquire about route and weather conditions before setting off. Your intended trail may be fully or partially closed, depending on the time of year and weather conditions.
