The Appenzell Railways connect the main towns of this charming area, such as St. Gallen with its Abbey Library, Appenzell with its Tudor-style houses, more than a thousand-year-old Herisau and Gossau, dominated by its 13th century castle Oberberg.

Whether you come for the interesting cultural events, for the wonderful hikes or for a mountain excursion, this area has something to offer to everyone. For instance, try an excursion to Mt. Säntis (2502 m a.s.l.) or any of these mountains: Hoher Kasten, Kronberg or Ebenalp.


Trains minimally run on an hourly basis, and some, such as the St.Gallen-Appenzell connection even run every half hour. Technical train buffs will love the Rorschach-Heiden and the Gais-Altstätten Stadt routes since they are connected by cogwheel train with an impressive gradient.
