Gorges de Moutier
Overview
Intro
North of the historic small town of Moutier lies the gorge of the same name, an attraction for hikers, paragliders and climbers alike.
The routes around the Raimeux mountain chain are real jewels of nature and offer something for everyone thanks to the various levels of difficulty. The steep paths, grey rock walls and virgin forests have a magic all of their own, while the view of the gorge from above is particularly impressive.
The river Birs, which crosses the Grand Val from south to north across the Jura mountain range, has carved out sizeable gorges upstream of Moutier (Gorges de Court through the Graitery anticline) and downstream (Gorges de Moutier through the Mont Raimeux anticline). These two transverse valleys perfectly illustrate the Jura fold pattern, which is why the Gorges de Moutier have been registered in the federal inventory of natural landscapes, sites and monuments of national importance.
