The Kunstmuseum Basel in the St. Alban Graben houses the oldest public art collection in the world. April 2016 saw the opening of the spectacular extension building opposite - created by the local architects Christ & Gantenbein. Visits now are twice as enjoyable.

The famous Amerbach Cabinet, the world's oldest public art collection, has always been a special treat at the Kunstmuseum Basel. Now, through the expansion by the Basel-based architects Christ & Gantenbeinand in the form of underground construction connected to the main building, the museum has yet another attraction that lends top-class art around a third more exhibition space inside an architecturally impressive frame.

In future the main building will be used for works dating from the 15th century to 1960. Special exhibitions take place in the spacious rooms of the new building; with works between the years 1960 and 1990 also viewed here. Contemporary art from 1990 onwards continues to be collected in the museum of contemporary art by the Rhein, which also belongs to the Kunstmuseum Basel.

Information

Basel’s museum of art will be subject to renovation as of February 2015 until March 2016. Exhibitions are viewed at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst (museum of contemporary art) during this time. The works of the Holbein family are exhibited in the Museum der Kulturen (museum of cultures).
