The free Walser people who migrated here from the Upper Valais have inhabited Calfeisen Valley since the early 14th century. They abandoned the settlement in 1653 because the climate became progressively harsher. The church of St. Martin, which is at the beginning of the hike, is a witness to that era. The hike leads from here up to Malsan Alp. Hikers reach the Alpine slab of Obersäss, the Little Alp of Untersäss and subsequently the SAC hut of Sardona via high moors. On the other side of the valley, the path leads back to the Walser settlement of St. Martin at Giger Forest Lake.
