Loreto Chapel
Overview
Intro
This Baroque-style building, which was constructed in 1648 and occupies a particularly beautiful spot above Fribourg, is a small-scale copy of the Santa Casa de Loreto in Italy and offers wonderful views of the old town.
The elegant little chapel owes its existence to the authorities of the city of Fribourg, who decided to build it in an effort to restore peace to Switzerland after the turmoil of the 16th century. Constructed by Jean-François de Reyff, a multi-talented Fribourg artist, the chapel is one of the most beautiful Baroque-era buildings in Switzerland. The terrace around the chapel offers magnificent views of Fribourg’s districts and bridges. The benches are the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the view at your leisure. The geometric paving, especially the cobblestones placed on their edges, also inspires meditation
The footpath to the Loreto Chapel is steep and may therefore be difficult for some visitors. The good news is that in summer there is a mini-train to take tourists to the top.
