Intro

For centuries, people needed to climb down one treacherous side to climb up the other. In 1893, a wooden bridge was built over this gorge. it is 48 meters long and 100 meters high.

The Ranft Gorge, created by the River Melchaa on its way from Melchsee-Frutt to Lake Alpnach, is quite deep and unpassable. For centuries, people needed to climb down one treacherous side to climb up the other. In 1893, a bridge was built over this gorge. it is 100 meters long and 100 meters high. This makes this covered wooden bridge connecting Kerns to Flüeli-Ranft the highest wooden bridge in Europe.
The area is also well-known for a famous Swiss saint, Niklaus von der Flüe who was born in Flüeli-Ranft. To this day, the famous peace-maker's former home attracts tourists and pilgrims.

How to get there:
Drive or take public transportation from Luzern to Kerns, via Sarnen. The bridge is on one of the minor roads of Flüeli-Ranft.
