Falconry Locarno is now also open in the winter. Up until March 14, 2014, from Wednesday through Sunday, animal lovers can enjoy the flight show at 2 PM. What’s special and unique about the show: visitors in the grandstand sit comfortably on heated cushions, and are given a blanket to keep their legs warm.

The aviaries are open from 1 PM to 4 PM, so that guests can admire the 25 birds of prey before and after the show. The aviary is home to eagles, falcons, vultures and owls, including great horned owls. Pio Nesa, the famous falconer from Ticino, not only allows the birds to fly for the benefit of the audience, but also discusses each species’ special character traits and habitat. It is a unique adventure to sit in the grandstand and experience these birds, watching them swoop above.

Falconry is a hunting art that dates back to antiquity. The sport was created about 4,000 years ago in the high plateaus of Asia’s steppes. The old art of hunting with the birds of prey while on horseback (and without using a gun) is being re-introduced at various locations in the world – including Locarno.
