Intro

To really slip under the skin of Bellinzona, begin your stroll at the Palazzo Civico, the city's elegant town hall. Oozing Italian flair, the spectacular inner courtyard has a loggia whose arches are adorned with murals that recount the eventful history of the "city of towers".

The scenes portrayed in the sgraffito lunettes are the handiwork of painter Baldo Carugo and date to 1925. They depict a prosperous transit and border city, which amassed its riches from the services revolving around goods transport. Before leaving the town hall, it's worth taking a peek at the assembly hall of cantonal parliament - an entire wall is given over to a panoramic painting that shows an up-and-coming Bellinzona in the 18th century from a bird's eye perspective.
