The prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps were officially recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.

There are over a thousand prehistoric pile dwelling settlements in six countries. A selection of the most important sites in the Alps has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage. These are the remnants of prehistoric villages that date from the period 5000 to 500 BC. Unfortunately, the archaeological settlement sites are mostly under water or under thick layers of sediment.
