Mittelland Route

A ride to remember

The most popular of Switzerland’s long-distance bike routes leads from Romanshorn to Geneva, without major climbs. The stretch between Aarau and Yverdon-les-Bains is especially rich in contrasts.

1st day:
Aarau–Solothurn (56 km): Two delightful towns flank this stage. From the cobbled streets of bustling Aarau›s Old Town, the route leads through the railway junction town of Olten and on to the Baroque city of Solothurn. The trail is full of thrilling variety: river traffic on the Aare, towns and people, factories and warehouses – and all around, lush nature offering moments of blissful tranquillity.

2nd day:
Solothurn–Ins (62 km): Solothurn is a delight to explore, with its Baroque Old Town and cathedral of St. Ursus, an early Neoclassical gem. From here, the Mittelland Route follows car-free lanes along the River Aare as it meanders through the pretty landscape of the Three Lakes Region. 130 years ago, the area between the lakes was marshland; today, it is regarded as the vegetable garden of Switzerland.

3rd day:
Ins–Yverdon-les-Bains (51 km): The trail leads along the shores of Lake Neuchâtel and right through Switzerland’s last great marshland, the Grande Cariçaie, home to many species of breeding birds. This stage of the route is ideal for families, with a string of attractions from the pile-dwelling settlement at Gletterens to the Frog Museum in Estavayer-le-Lac.
