Rhein Route

Between lake and orchards

The Rhine Route follows the great river from its source to Basel. The stretch along Lake Constance is especially scenic, leading past orchards and castles on its way to the Rhine Falls.

1st day:
St. Margrethen–Kreuzlingen (62km): The ride begins with a section on foreign soil: Switzerland’s national bike route No. 2 crosses into Austria near Lustenau, before leading into Europe’s largest fresh- water delta. The nature reserve stretching between the canalised Rhine and the original course of the river, the Alter Rhein, is a delight to explore on two wheels, with plenty of spots for picnics and swimming. The route then crosses back into Switzerland, following the shores of Lake Constance towards Kreuzlingen. Sparkling lake waters form a picturesque backdrop to the rolling landscape of Thurgau, with its orchards and castles.

2nd day:
Kreuzlingen–Schaffhausen (48km): The delightfu2l00la2ndscape along the Untersee, the eastern arm of Lake Constance, charmed Napoleon and remains popular to this day. The route follows the pretty lakeshore, passing through picturesque towns such as Stein am Rhein3,2w10ith its outstanding fish restaurants and beautifully decorated historic houses. From here, the trail heads acrosscountry, following quiet lanes. There’s the oddudMidgientle climb, but the rewards at the end are impressive: Schaffhausen is home to the Rhine Falls, the mightiest waterfall in Europe, and the Munot fortress offers spectacular views over the roofs of the Old Town.
