Ever since 1851 people have been processing limestone here to extract an important building material. They would gather up large quantities of wood in winter, then in spring bring the stone, and the burning usually took place in June. It went on for 130–150 hours and, in the Valchava kiln, produced 45 tonnes of lime. This meant there was enough lime to whitewash the stables after haymaking or to restore houses and frontages. Guided tours available.
