More than 300 years ago, Brig merchant Kaspar Jodok Stockalper developed the mule trail across the Simplon pass and achieved wealth and power. Today, as the ViaStockalper, the historical route passes through a diverse cultural and transport landscape. The stretch passing through the lonely and peaceful Taferna valley on the northern side of the pass and the path through the wild Gondo gorge in the south are two contrasts that give this route its special charm.
