Bex

The history of the Bex Saltworks and the Salt Mines is directly connected to the important discovery of the salt sources in the Vaud region in the 15th century. Salt was a rare commodity and difficult to transport. Today, the Bex salt mine is the only open working mine in Switzerland.
An audiovisual presentation and exhibition relating the fascinating story of salt mining over three centuries will be shown in an old reservoir that was dug in 1826. A narrow-gauge train then takes visitors to the heart of the mine. Then an hours' walk allows the visitors to discover the immense amount of effort that went into searching for salt sources underground, and into actually breaking up the rock to extract the salt, which was, at the time, worth its weight in gold. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy shoes and a warm sweater for the visit.

Opening hours:
From April to October. Advance bookings preferable but not obligatory.

How to get there:
By car: take the motorway, exit at Bex and follow the brown signs.
By train: make your way to the Bex railway station.
On foot: walk from Bex railway station to the salt mines. This should take about an hour.
