Lucerne, you could say, is the essence of Switzerland: city, lake and mountains. From the shores of Lake Lucerne, legendary railways and cable cars lead up to some of the most beautiful viewpoints and mountain peaks: the Rigi, for example, “Queen of the Mountains”; the permanent snow on the Titlis; and the Pilatus, via the world’s steepest cog railway. The lakeshores are fascinating too: here, the Swiss hero William Tell is said to have fought for freedom, while on Ru.tli meadow in 1291, the Swiss Confederation was founded.
