Named Historic Hotel of the Year for 2008 by Icomos (the International Council on Monuments and Sites), the Schatzalp was built in Art Nouveau style. The novelist Thomas Mann describes it in “The Magic Mountain”. Opened as a luxurious sanatorium in 1900, it is now a hotel, but its soul – the architecture – remains unchanged.
The historic hotel of the year 2008

The Schatzalp was designated historic hotel of the year 2008 «in recognition of the largely preserved and adroitly utilized historic hotel building, its authentic furnishings, and the rehabilitation of the Schatzalp Alpinum botanical gardens. The hotel management continues to transmit the history of the place and its guests, as well as the myth of the magic mountain in such convincing and unfailing dedication, that a visit of the Schatzalp always turns out a memorable experience.»

The Schatzalp hotel was conceived as a luxury sanatorium and built by the architecture firm of Pfleghard & Haefeli. It opened in 1900 as a prime location for international circles of tuberculosis patients who could afford the rather exclusive care. The funicular was built at that time and still functions today. The core principle of therapy then was an optimal exposure to sunlight. Here, on the legendary yellow Davos long chairs, the patients were resting for days on end, wrapped in blankets and catching the fresh mountain air and the sun. Progress in medicine led to the closing of the sanatorium in the 1950es. But already in 1954, the Schatzalp reopened as a hotel with 92 rooms, once it had been carefully restored. Much of the original building has remained. Witness the original elevator installation from 1900. The interior captivates the eye with its generous common rooms in the art nouveau style and with many original fittings in the partially restored bathrooms. Other quality additions – namely some period furniture – date back to 1954, when the hotel was transformed.
