In the year 1423, the Safran Guild acquired the Ballhof at Gerbergasse near the Town Hall and constructed a new building in the 16th Century.

When the Gerbergasse was widened in 1899, the Guild House had to make way and was rebuilt, though slightly recessed. The architects Rudolf Linder and Gustav Adolf Visscher van Gaasbeck designed the Neo-Gothic Guild House. It was inaugurated on January 20, 1902.

The building was almost demolished in the mid 1970s, but instead it was renovated and upgraded with a lift and a service staircase. These form the operational backbone for the management of the restaurant and the four halls. Especially impressive is the richly furnished large guildhall on the second floor, which was exquisitely augmented with three new chandeliers. The pervasive historical substance of the house is continually cared for and restored in accordance with monument preservation principles.

The highlight of the culinary offerings is the classic and traditionally fresh seasonal cuisine. Among the specialties of the house is the Medieval Guild Dinner. The atmospheric halls are ideally suited to banquets. To do justice to the growing demands of the guests, special events are organized. For example, themed evening functions like "d Fasnacht in dr Saffre", or "Carnival in the Safran" – Safran-Zunft is a restaurant where groups of friends get together. Or try an excursion into Basel’s underworld, the canalized Brisig, which is accessible from the cellar.

Restaurant seats 100 guests. Three separate rooms with 20, 30 and 50 seats. The Foyer can accommodate up to 100 persons. Guild Hall with 300 seats.
