Special Commendation 1999: In 1887, an eating house was constructed out of a narrow terraced house, typical of the Old Town of Wil and dating from the 16th-19th centuries. Legends abound about the building which includes a portrayal of Canaan, the Promised Land, on its façade.
It is still believed that the recently deceased owner and hostess of the restaurant sits in ghostly form in the panelled guest lounge, which also served as her living room. And yet much has happened in the meantime. The Catholic parish of Wil has taken over the 'Falkenburg' from the heirs on the condition that they run it as a restaurant and preserve the dining room. This banished any speculative interest in the house and preserves a typical old town restaurant.
A sensitive restoration was carried out in 1995, following a clear architectural concept. As well as the gentle and expert care applied to the historic fabric of the building, a state-of-the-art kitchen was successfully installed in extremely limited space. In the guest lounge, the incorporation of the usual, destructive serving facilities could be avoided through the use of a mobile buffet. The obligatory toilet facilities have been skillfully integrated on the first floor between the dining halls and the rear room. There is no irritating air-conditioning system, and fire and trading regulations have been implemented sensitively with no unwelcome additions.
