Special Commendation 1998: The castle at Wülfingen was built between 1644 and 1647 by Hartmann Escher. It underwent reconstruction and renovation in 1767. It has operated as a country inn since the 19th century and has been in the hands of the city of Winterthur since 1911.
Since its major restoration in 1907/08, conducted under the control of the monument preservation authority, the building has been continuously and carefully maintained by the city of Winterthur. The imposing house is decorated with stepped gables and contains a large, vaulted cellar as well as a whole series of historic rooms equipped with wall and ceiling panels, tiled stoves and ornamental plasterwork. Some of the furniture is original, some was copied in 1907 from examples in the local museum.
The historic rooms are used extensively for a variety of functions. However, being an historic monument, restrictions are strictly imposed, such as dancing being limited to the main hall. Any new fittings are modest so as not to disturb the historic ambience. A garden restaurant has been tastefully added where an ornamental baroque garden was once located. In a manner appropriate to the property, the hosts offer lovingly and carefully prepared high-quality cuisine in charming surroundings.
