At the start of September, around 340 cows descend from the Alpine pastures of Dürrenwald after the summer months - adorned with flowers and ribbons. Accompanied by the farmers and their owherds, they are welcomed back into the village of St. Stephan by spectators from near and far.

The Tourist Office arranges the festive cattle descent in St. Stephan, which is known far beyond the Swiss borders. Yodelling, the sounds of the Alphorns and country music add to the celebratory mood. Food and drink is served by the local restaurants, various booths offer local products and arts and crafts. The purchase of a festival voucher entitles visitors to a participate in a competition with attractive prizes.
