Second Sunday in July

Wildkirchli is a cave situated in the Alpstein range in Canton Appenzell Innerrhoden. It has become renowned for its prehistoric finds. On the second Sunday in July, the festival of the guardian angel is held there.

At ten o'clock in the morning, a priest or Capuchin monk from the town of Appenzell holds the service, which is enhanced by the church choir. Afterwards, a yodelers' chorus presents the characteristic yodeling songs of Appenzell in a festive manner. Meanwhile the participants start off on foot to Ebenalp or to Aescher, where they will eat and dance.

The festival was the idea of a Capuchin monk who in 1621 thought the place ideal for a mountain worship service. He moved away shortly afterwards, but Appenzell priest Paulus Ulmann took up the idea and set up a foundation in 1679 to ensure the continuation of the service. It has done so to this day. A similar Sunday service is held at Michaeli on September 29, but is mostly attended by tourists since the alps are not used for grazing at that time of year.
