The hotel received an award "for the professional restoration of the high-quality hotel furnishings that were preserved in their entirety and reflect all epochs of the hotel’s existence."
As early as 1357, “Haus Werners, Wirt von Amsteg, am Beginn der Steigung zum Gotthardpass” (“The House of Werner, innkeeper of Amsteg, at the start of the ascent to the Gotthard Pass”) was documented in the annals. It is to be assumed that the reference is to the Hotel Sternen, which was visited by Goethe in 1775. Destroyed in a fire in 1788, the inn was rebuilt right away. In 1830 the rear annex was built. With the establishment of one of Switzerland’s first post offices at the Gotthard Pass, the “Sternen” was named Hotel Stern & Post in 1850 and became a much sought-after staging inn for travelers. In 1946/47 the hall and restaurant on the first floor as well as the entrance and the stairs were reconstructed, and in 1956/57 a hall facing the garden was built. During the latest renovation in 2007/08 the individual rooms and the furniture were restored basically in their earliest style, which lets visitors relive the eventful history of the house.
