Opened in 1930 on the sunny plateau of Crans-Montana, high above the Rhone valley, the Hotel Bella Lui is now recognised as an outstanding example of Modernist architecture.
Special «Mobiliar» Prize 2006 by the Mobiliar Insurance & Financial Securities Company «for the preservation and restoration of large parts of the original furniture in the rooms designed in the style of modernity by Flora Steiger-Crawford (1899-1991), the first certified woman architect in Switzerland».

Built in 1929, the Hotel Bella Lui already catered to a clientele who had certain expectations with regard to the hotel infrastructure at the time. In the year of construction, Flora Steiger-Crawford happened to be called to furnish the former sanatorium at Crans-Montana, where she developed a new way type of room design. For the Bella Tola alone, she created the first pieces of gray-green furniture including closets, bathroom tables, and office furniture with rolling shutters. The interior architect focused on almost minimalist linear and strictly functional forms. Thanks to the preservation of the still existing furniture – which had long been considered of no particular importance – today’s guests may still experience the original design concept as imagined by the architect at the time.
