Special distinction 2000
Distinguished «for the preservation and the long lasting care of a traditional general work of art (from the interior design to the small inventory) as a manifest of high quality country style from the late 1930es.»
The Chesa Grischuna was built in 1938, at a time when Switzerland organized its national exhibition in Zurich and the patriotic fever ran high. Architecture, interior design, small furniture and the entire inventory were all created by Hermann Schneider, a Zurich architect, and then produced according to his plans by local artisans. Artists from the owner’s circle of friends also contributed some frescoes and paintings to the overall artwork. The story of the house is closely linked to American soldiers detained during the war, who later returned to the Chesa Grischuna with their families and friends to create their own “little Hollywood” on the premises.

This hotel was designed by the top Zürich
architect Hermann Schneider in 1938, in the
run-up to a Swiss national exhibition, as a
total work of art of its time. He succeeded
beautifully in blending traditional craftsmanship
with creative contemporary art, down to
the last detail. During the Second World War,
the Chesa was a favourite among GIs, who
returned later for holidays. It soon attracted
writers and celebrities from the movie in dustry,
and the Chesa became known affectionately
as “Hollywood on the rocks”.
