Even the journey to Valais by Mont Blanc Express from Martigny is a delightful adventure. The cogwheel train climbs up the steep incline of the mountain, while the town of Vernayaz soon takes on the appearance of a toy village with toy houses. Within the short span of a quarter of an hour the Mont Blanc Express transports the visitor from the Rhone Valley with its numerous houses and its industries to a different world. A world in which the largest houses that cling to the steep mountainsides date back to the first tourism boom, between the years of 1860 and 1920.

If you want to mingle with the local inhabitants and would like to participate in their daily life, Dominique Fournier's establishment ("Tchoum") is the place to be. He makes the time to speak to his guests, lets them participate (if they are inclined to do so) in his work as a mountain farmer, he explains, shows, discusses his activities. His living room is the guests' living room. The house is situated in the middle of the village of Les Granges. Breakfast consists of homemade products. Guests have the option of preparing the other meals themselves, using Dominique Fournier's large open kitchen range. Depending on the season and on what they choose to do, guests can help out on the small mountain farm with its 10 black cows or in the orchards.
