No fewer than 47 mountain peaks here top 4,000 m. It is no surprise, then, that the Valais is regarded as the ultimate destination for fans of the mountains – whether hikers or mountain bikers, artists, sun lovers or gourmets. Indeed, the people of the Valais are proud of their local specialities: from saffron rice to air-dried meat, and from leek tart to raclette and a huge variety of cheeses. Not to mention that the Valais is the biggest wine-producing region in Switzerland – with styles and standards to match.
Valley of minerals.
Among mineral aficionados, the wild and romantic Binntal is a classic: more than 160 varieties of crystal, some extremely rare, are found in this nature reserve, which borders directly on the oldest natural park in Piedmont in Italy. Old smugglers’ routes, now marked as footpaths and mountain bike trails, lead up to the passes in just a few hours. The geological centre and educational trail reveal many of the valley’s hidden secrets. The Jungfrau-Aletsch Region is nowlabelled World Natural Heritage by UNESCO.Known for the extraordinary beauty of its land-scape,it is the first and only site in the Alps tobear this honorable distinction.
