The botanical garden has a collection of plants from all over the world. Around 1,500 species, most of them from the southern hemisphere, as well as from the Mediterranean and the Far East: the Himalayas, China, Japan.
The Park was laid out in 1885 by Baroness Antoinette de Saint-Léger. This was a lady who loved socialising, and painters, sculptors, musicians and writers were all welcome guests. In 1927 she finally lost all her wealth and sold the islands to a wealthy businessman from Hamburg, Max Emden. It was he who built the palace that is still standing today, the Roman baths, the "Orangerie" and the harbour. Today it is part of the canton of Ticino. in addition to the rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias that are typical of the island gardens here, and are seen in all their glory in the spring, we can also find various kinds of palm and bamboo, swamp cypress, eucalyptus trees that are hundreds of years old, cistus from the Mediterranean and tree ferns from Oceania.
