Traces and memories of the Monte Verità colony.
In the first decade of the 20th Century, a colony was founded on the hill above Ascona. The colony was dedicated to a new philosophy which was based on principles of naturalism, theosophy, vegetarianism and nusdism. Among the famous visitors of the Monte Verità colony there were writers such as Hermann Hesse, E.M. Remarque, the Psychonanalyst Otto Gross and Rudolf Steiner.
The colony was left in 1920. Nowadays, three buildings are part of the museum circuit: Casa Anatta, Casa Selma and the wooden pavilion "Chiaro Mondo dei Beati".
Casa Anatta: home of the founders of the naturalist community built in 1902. The peculiar nature of this construction - flat roof, double walls and sliding doors, wooden barrel vaults in all rooms - chosen as "Switzerland's most original wooden house", was brought to light in the thirties. Permanent exhibition on the history of the Monte Verità.
Casa Selma: typical "air-light" hut, adopted by the vegetarian community and cooperative society right from the first years of its establishment on the Monte Verità.
The wooden pavilion "Chiaro Mondo dei Beati" was erected on the foundation of the former solarium of the community. Therein you find the giant painting with the same name of Elisar von Kupffer (1923).
