The Swiss Knife Valley holiday and excursion destinations in the historic heart of Switzerland offer varied countryside and relaxation, experiences and adventures: Stoos, a local and car-free holiday area, is located on a sun terrace with a wonderful view of Lake Lucerne, and is particularly popular with hikers, bikers and paraglider pilots. Railways up to the peak depart from Goldau, Vitznau and Weggis. Cableways take passengers from Gersau and Goldau to Rigi-Scheidegg, starting point for many hikes. And the panorama trail between Scheidegg and Kaltbad provides the perfect opportunity for circular tours of the Rigi.

The Museum of the Swiss Charters in Schwyz houses the historic testimonies of the early Swiss confederacy, and the Forum of Swiss History provides an opportunity for a multi-media experience of everyday life between 1300 and 1800.

At Goldau Zoo deer will eat out of the hands of children. The extensive enclosure in which the animals move around freely enables direct contact with the animals. The zoo, located romantically in the wild countryside of the big Goldau rock fall with its house-high rocks, is predominantly home to European animals.

Winter

The Swiss Knife Valley winter holiday region comprises 40 transport facilities with more than 90 km of pistes, a fun park, half-pipes, toboggan runs, cross-country skiing, snow-shoe trekking and winter hiking trails, dotted around the family-friendly winter sports areas of Stoos-Fronalpstock, Sattel-Hochstuckli, by the Rigi and at the feet of the two mythical peaks.

• Schwyz townscape – fabulous village square with a parish church, town hall and manor houses. A few individual Schwyz houses, such as the Hofstatt Ital Redding dating from 1609, are among the most magnificent secular buildings in Switzerland.
  
• Demonstration Cheese Dairy Schwyzerland in Seewen – watching, tasting, enjoying and buying for groups and individual visitors.
  
• Kirschstrasse – features everything from cherry blossom to distilled kirsch produced in the demonstration distilleries along ‘Kirsch Street’.
  
• Hölloch karst cave system in the Muota Valley – measuring about 190 km, this is the longest cave in Europe and the fifth-biggest cave system in the world. The caves can only be visited as part of a guided cave expedition.
  
• Swiss Path (Weg der Schweiz) – 35-km-long theme trail dedicated to the history of Switzerland around Lake Uri, the southernmost and most romantic part of Lake Lucerne.

• Fasnacht – traditional carnival (Fasnacht) customs, including the «Japanesenspiel» (carnival theatre) and many carnival bands, or Guggenmusiken (February).
  
• ’Rigi-Schwinget’ – the wrestling and Alpine farmers’ festivals on the Rigi are age-old customs featuring colourful fringe events and the driving of cattle up the mountains (July).
  
• Rose Festival in Weggis – a lively mix consisting of a fun fair, festival bars and restaurants and entertainment (June).
  
• Iron Bike Race, Einsiedeln – Mountain Bike Race around the fantastically situated high valley of the Einsiedeln region (September).
