Disentis / Sedrun
Select your Region:

The quiet holiday region of Disentis/Sedrun in Grisons is in the upper part of the valley of the Anterior Rhine, the Surselva. Special features of the region are the large Benedictine monastery at Disentis and the source of the Rhine in the idyllic Tomasee.
The region first gained in importance with the construction of the Lukmanier and Oberalp passes. The Oberalp Pass which leads to Andermatt at the foot of the Gotthard is an ideal starting point for tours on foot or by bike – for example, to the idyllic Tomasee lake, which, among the various source tributaries, is considered as the official source of the Anterior Rhine. This is where the "Veloland Schweiz" Rhine Route begins.
As well as the source of the Rhine, the monastery in Disentis is of great importance. The monastery of St. Martin, founded in the 8th century, is one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in Europe. The Baroque collegiate church, dating from 1712, with its two onion-domed towers and rich stucco work and painted ceilings is one of the most important sacred buildings in Grisons.
One day, this holiday region will be directly connected into the north-south railway axis by the planned "Porta Alpina", an underground railway station inside the 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel, with a lift connection up to Sedrun. This will dramatically cut journey times to get here. In Sedrun it is possible to go to see work on the world’s longest tunnel.
There are over 350 km of footpaths around the two resorts. As well as the walk to the source of the Rhine and the Alp Transit Tunnel path, the high alpine "Senda Sursilvana" path (about 100 km from the Oberalp Pass to Chur) is one of the highlights for hikers in the region. The 9-hole golf course in Sedrun is the only place in Switzerland where you can hit your ball over the Rhine. All over the region, sparkling treasures may come to light (search for minerals).
The two ski areas of Disentis and Sedrun, with the latter being part of the Gotthard Oberalp Arena, offer 200 km of slopes. Families are especially fond of these wide slopes while snowboarders get their money’s worth in the fun park and on the half-pipe. There’s lots of fun to be had on the 3.5 km long sledging run in Sedrun’s main skiing area. In the evening, the Aqua Wellness Oasis "Bogn Sedrun" is an inviting place to relax. Disentis is known as a freeriding, off-piste and touring paradise, with 60 km of guaranteed snow slopes rising up to nearly 3000 m. Disentis/Sedrun also has over 30 km of varied cross-country skiing tracks.
